Former Magistrate Pat O'Shane, Councillor Rob Pyne
and Shane Cuthbert form 'dream team'.
Local leaders Rob Pyne, Pat O'Shane and Shane Cuthbert jointly announce their independent candidacy for the Cairns local elections in March.
Former MP and Councillor Rob Pyne will not be contesting his division 2 seat at the upcoming Local Elections in March instead, Pyne will be running (currently unopposed) in Division 5, following an announcment by Amy Eden that she is looking at the top job.
If elected, Rob Pyne will be the first Councillor in Australia to have been elected across three divisions, having previously taken seats from Terry James in 3 and John Schilling in 2. Pyne says he believes in 'independents moving forward'. It comes at a crucial time for the Unity team, who seem 'disunited' since former unity member Amy Eden and leader Kevin Byrne seek to put together their own teams.
Pat O'Shane AM needs no introduction having accomplished and achieved so much through out her life. Pat today officially announces her intention to challenge Unity member Rhonda Coghlan and if elected, will be the first indigenous representative at the Cairns Council. O'Shane says 'Currently, the Cairns Regional Council does not have indigenous representation and I intend to change all that". This, follows the Council decision against supporting a reconciliation plan.
Pat O'Shane recently returned from the Melbourne Film Festival where a film produced by NITV 'rebel with a cause' was premiered in front of a packed crowd. Fellow independent candidate Shane Cuthbert appears briefly as a young person, once sentenced by the former Magistrate turned law student and President of the CQU Law Society in Cairns.
Community Advocate Shane Cuthbert, will stand (currently unopposed) in division 4 for a 'safer, greater Cairns'. If elected, Cuthbert will be the first formerly incarcerated young person to be elected to a Council in Queensland and says 'i have great mentors in local legends Pyne and O'Shane who have been the first to do many things" and "who would have thought all those years ago when Pat sentenced me as a young person that I would be standing beside her for election, people can change and anyone can do anything".
The 'Dream Team' following Cuthbert, Pyne and O'Shane's bid for election and social change is currently being documented by Queensland film makers Art Life Films.
