DIVISION ONE SPOTLIGHT
Miriwinni - Babinda - Gordonvale
Gordonvale was established on Yidinji tribal land. Yidinji (also known as Yidinj, Yidiny, and Idindji) is an Australian Aboriginal language. Its traditional language region is within the local government areas of Cairns Region and Tablelands Region, in such localities as Cairns, Gordonvale, and the Mulgrave River, and the southern part of the Atherton Tableland including Atherton and Kairi.
As the region of Cairns grows, it is expected the south side suburbs will become the first choice for new home owners with the population of Cairns set to double by 2050. Infrastucture and a new section of highway has been built through Gordonvale, connecting with the Bruce Highway in Edmonton. Home Of the Cane Toad In June 1935 the Queensland Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations imported 102 cane toads into Gordonvale from Hawaii in June 1935, in the belief that the toads would eat the cane beetles, a pest in the sugarcane industry.
By March 1937 some 62,000 toadletshad been bred and distributed into sugar cane fields up and down the Queensland coast. The experiment did not work and the toads have spread throughout much of Australia. Current Councillor Brett Moller is the current Councillor for Division one and remains unopposed as part of the Cairns Unity team. Councillor Moller is one of the most advanced in terms of governance and leadership.
