STEVE LIPPINGWELL DIVISION TWO (Independent) CANDIDATE
Edmonton - Bentley Park - Mt Sheridan
Steve Lippingwell, a Cairns school teacher who lives in Mt Sheridan, has formally announced his independent candidacy forDivision 2 Councillor in the Cairns Regional Council elections in March 2024. Division 2 encompasses the suburbs of Edmonton, Bentley Park and the majority of Mt Sheridan. As a Teacher and former campaign manager for Rob Pyne Steve Lippingwell, will bring experience, knowledge and sensibility to the Division.
Mr Lippingwell has taught high school in FNQ for the last 20 years and has degrees in economics and education from the University of QLD. He has also written legal studies textbooks for the QLD and NSW curriculums. The south side has seen enormous growth over the last few years. The Division is in the ‘baby belt’, with a high proportion of young families who have mortgages to pay. Lippingwell says “This benefits everyone, including pensioners. It also helps keep rents low as landlords won’t have to pass on increased rates through rent increases”.
Steve Lippingwell has gained positive media attention recently having started a petition against the unpopular youth detention centre proposed in Edmonton.Lippingwell lists his other key priority as fighting the crime crisis, saying “we desperately need a CCTV network installed alongside the South Side’s crime corridors, which can be accessed by Police in real time and deter perpetrators”.
Lipping well says, “Many parts of the Division are also poorly lit, which makes it easier for offenders to move about undetected. Given the population growth and high crime statistics, it is long overdue for Council to invest in this infrastructure”. Steve Lippingwell, gained more than 450 signitures within three days of commencing his petition, which can be found online on the Queensland Government petitions portal. Mr Lippingwell will also be lobbying for reinstitution free green waste vouchers leading up to cyclone season, more off lead dog parks and better sporting facilities in neglected parts of the Division.
The current Division 2 Councillor Rob Pyne has announced he will seek election in Division 5, in 2024.
